  1. I agree that pearl Harbor and the 911 attacks are similar. Both of the attacks came by surprise and the Americans weren't prepared to defend themselves. Also,The Japanese and Arabs both attacked the Americans by air warfare and the Americans declared war on both of the countries after the attack.

  2. i believe that pearl harbor and 9/11 are very different but are very similar at the same time. They are similar because many people died buildings and property were destroyed. They are different because pearl harbor was followed through by a country and 9/11 was by terrorists.

  3. so christine basically said everything i was going to say. I do also believe that the 911 attack was similar to Pearl Harbor in the sense that they are both from air attacks and were used to send a specific message to the United States. In addition, the U.S. seemed to fight back in a similar sense. However the difference is that after Pearl Harbor, they were just angry and fought back, but out of 911, there was a strong surge of nationalism and patriotism. People really came together after 911 to help out those who lost their lives in the attack. Overall, however, I believe that Pearl Harbor and 911 are similar because of the outcomes and reason for the attacks.

  4. I agree that 9/11 and Pearl Harbor have many similarities, but overall, I think they were two separate attacks caused for different reasons. The attack and Pearl Harbor occurred on December 7th, 1941. The Japanese attacked the United States naval base in Hawaii when the US threatened to put sanctions on Japan. Because the Japanese needed the resources and raw materials from the US, they believed they needed to act first. About 2, 887 Americans were killed. The United States responded later by bombing two major cities of Japan, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This event was the beginning of Japanese and American paths to World War II. Pearl Harbor and 9/11 were both unannounced attacks- in other words, they were surprise attacks. However, there were warnings in both cases, which the US apparently chose to ignore. “In the weeks leading up to Sept. 11, dozens of urgent, detailed warnings of attacks involving hijacked airliners and US landmarks came from German, French, Russian and Israeli intelligence, an Arab newspaper, several prisoners and members of New York’s Muslim communities” (The 9/11 Bill of Rights). On the tragic day of September 11th, 2001, four airliners were hijacked by members of an Islamist group, Al-Qaeda, led by Osama Bin Laden. Two airliners destroyed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. One crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The last one, directed toward the White House in Washington D.C., crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. About 2,973 were killed. Both Pearl Harbor and 9/11 required suicide pilots, who sacrificed their lives for their deeds. Called kamikaze in Japan, these men murdered hundreds of people along with themselves. There are various theoretical motives as to why the hijackers did what they did, but the true answer to the question still remains today. Some say that it was for religious reasons; however, the symbolic buildings and places that were targeted points more toward a political reason. The United States responded to this attack with the War on Terrorism, “the military, political, legal, and ideological conflict against Islamic terrorism, with the stated goals of preventing the emergence of other terrorist networks. These goals would be accomplished by means including economic and military sanctions against states perceived as harboring terrorists and increasing global surveillance and intelligence sharing” (Wikipedia). Numerous military operations have taken place in the Middle East since then. Hate crimes against certain races and other acts of terrorism have occurred as well as shifts in foreign relations. The 9/11 incident is known to some people as World War III due to the involvement of many countries around the world in the post 9/11 events.

  5. The Pearl Harbor and 9/11 attacks were similar in that they were both really bad attacks on American people and many people died as a result of them, but the two events were also very different. Pearl Harbor was kind of an attack with the intent of destroying the American fleet and forcing Americans to acknowledge Japanese domination in the Pacific Ocean. When terrorists attacked World Trade Center, it was an intentional provocation of Americans to instigate a war. While Japan was trying to prevent America joining the fray, al-Qaeda members were trying to get America to fight them.

  6. I think that 9/11 and Pearl Harbor are similar because, they were both a surprise to everyone and nobody was ready to fight back. Also for Pearl Harbor people did get signals but did not realize that those were planes coming to them. And for 9/11 nobody had a little warning at all, and it killed very many people for no reason.

  7. It depends what you compare. The "sneak attack" theme was evident in both events. Although, while Japan attacked in representation of their army, country, etc, the 9/11 attacks were terrorists. And because of this, many people turn to prejudice against the country because of some of its inhabitants. I've heard many people refer to people from the middle east as "terrorists." So, although both were tragically appalling, it's more about comparing the right factors than comparing them as a whole.

  8. I agree that pearl Harbor and the 911 attacks are kind of the same. But both attacks were for different reasons but both were completely by surprise. The Americans weren't ready to protect themselves. They were both really bad because of the outcome of the number of people killed. They were different because pearl harbor was a military strike conducted by the Japanese navy against the United States Naval Base. As 9/11 was a series of sucidal acts, but meant to start a war.

  9. I agree, because they were both unexpected attackes that killed thousands and we went to war because of it.

  10. I disagree, I think they are two different experiences. 9/11 caused a secure effect. Where everyone is extra causious now a days. As with Pearl Harbor got the US into the war. They are both terrible events involving USA.

  11. In my opinion, i feel that the attack on Pearl Harbor and 9/11 was similar but also in a way different. I think they are the same because they both were surprise attacks and no one knew they were coming and they also both killed a lot of people. They are different because now 9/11 has made us more cautious about traveling on airplanes while Pearl Harbor was just an attack that led to war.

  12. They are both similar, in that they caused nationwide panic and thousands of deaths. However, Pearl Harbor involved a conventional militaristic ambush that was planned out by an entire nation and carried out by many individuals. While they both had thousands of individuals perish, most of Pearl Harbor's victims were soldiers, not ordinary citizens, and it never really occurred in close proximity to the rest of the nation as 9/11 did. Japan's intentions were mostly militaristic while Al Quaeda was motivated mainly by radical Islamic beliefs. Bombs and bullets were replaced by large jet airplanes carrying large amounts of jet fuel. Pearl Harbor was never as much a suicide mission as 9/11 was. It's Branko in case you couldn't figure it out.

  13. I agree the two attacks are similar, because both attacks were unexpected. Both attacks did not lead to war, only one did. The one that did end up going to war was the Pearl Harbor attack and that resulted in WWII. 2,974 died as an immediate result of 9-11. Also many out of state firemen and police officers went to New York to help

  14. They are similar and different...
One may say that they were both deliberate attacks on the united states and were completely unjust. Which they were. Another might say it was completely different do to the reasons it were done. Like the Japanese did it because of the US's lack of trading good with Japan. In 9/11 it was all because of terrorists terrorizing the united states of America. So in conclusion they are both the same but completely different.

  15. I believe that the 9/11 was similar to pearl harbor because they both attacked us by surprise and killed many people.I also believe they are different because pearl harbor got us started into the war and the attacks happened for different reasons.

  16. 9/11 to this day is a date of sheer horror and will always be remembered. Pearl harbor was just as terrifying, but I do not think it will be remembered as much, which is certainly one difference. They are both similar however in the fact that they both were unexpected attacks and inflicted much pain on our citizens.

  17. I agree that 9/11 was similar to pear harbor only because they both were attacked by surprise and were not prepared. Both tragedies killed many people. They both were attacked for different reasons but had the same outcome. I think that 9/11 will be remembered for an eternity.

  18. i agree that they were similer, but i also think they were different. they were similar because they were both surprise attacks to try to scare America. They were diffenert because in Pearl Harbor we did the right thing, and fought back. and look what happened...... we won. now were over here, and they're over therre. in 911 wew didnt fight back... we hesitated and they took advantage of the U.S's weak-point......George Bush. if we just bombed Iraq and whoever else was bein disrespectfull, ya a lot of people would have died, inocent and guilty. but a lot less would have died then the amount that has died now. and A LOT less of Americans would have died. but we didnt... we hesitated...... and now there over there and we're over here........... thanks Bush
